ROUND ROBIN UPDATE!

Saturday, April 14th, at Full Moon Farm.

(details below)

***The Region has selected the ‘B’ version of the USEF Dressage Tests for each respective

division.***

What exactly IS a Round Robin?  Glad you asked!  The format is the same as a horse trial or an

Eventing  competition – a dressage test, timed stadium jumping round following by across

country course.  It's a blast and a great chance to practice/show your stuff! Each

rider will be assigned their own starting times and you are free to come and go as you’d

like during the day (unlike a Rally where you have to stay all day with your team).

The MD Region has a coveted prize referred to as the Bedford Bowl that is awarded to the

club that has the highest number of points earned in Round Robins.   OUR GOAL is to bring

it back to APC where it truly belongs!!

***************************************************************************

REGISTRATION is currently open, and closes on April 6th. BUT...this event is capacity-limited,

so it's important to REGISTER NOW/ASAP in order to ensure your spot!

COST: $55.00 for USPC Round Robin Division   Note that The ratings suggested for each

division is not mandatory  – ie. If you are a C1 and want to ride in Beginner Novice

– it’s OK!  The region is most interested in promoting safety first and foremost – don’t

over-sell yourself or  your horse.   If you are not yet rated, you can participate in the HT

division (non USPC) for this competition at the same price as the Round Robin.

TO GET STARTED: Please e-mail Joe Kirby (APC Round Robin Chair) at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

NOW just to let him know that you’re planning to participate and get your paperwork in

times – It’s always nice for the kids to enjoy the social part of the competition!

of vaccination for Equine Influenza and Rhinopneumonitis (EVH) having been administered

About Annapolis Pony Club

What is Pony Club?

Pony Club is one of the leading junior (ages 7-25) equestrian organizations in the world, represented throughout 48 states and the Virgin Islands, with more than 12,000 members. It is not necessary for a child to own a horse or pony, but they must have access to one when required.

What Kinds of Events Can Pony Clubbers Participate in?

Programs are offered in dressage, eventing, show jumping, mounted games, tetrathlon, quiz, and polocrosse. Our club also offers various clinics with area trainers and lessons throughout the whole year.

What are Unmounted Meetings?

We hold most of our meetings in the Annapolis or surrounding area. During unmounted meetings members learn about feeding, shoeing, veterinary care, and other areas of horse management. Under adult supervision, the more experienced Pony Club members instruct and assist younger members.

Pony Clubbers are encouraged to work their way through nine stages of the progressive Standards of Proficiency, which test knowledge and riding ability. Pony Clubbers who attain the B, H-A and A rating levels meet standards of competency that are recognized throughout the horse world.

What is the Role of the Parent?

Parents play an important role in Pony Club. They may share one of many roles within the Club circle, such as chaperone, jump judge, or assist in activity events and fundraisers. There are very few mandatory work days that all parents should plan to participate in. Those events are the club sponsored Round Robin/Horse Trial in the spring.

BARN ALERT!!!

Some local farms have been robbed in the last month. The culprits have been sneaking into the backs of

the barns in the middle of the night or the middle of the day, breaking into lockers, using bolt cutters and

power tools to gain access to the tack.  Everything of value is being taken, saddles, bridles, blankets, even

half chaps.  They stole $70,000.00 worth of stuff from Heritage.  They are so quiet, dogs at the farms don't

even bark.  I would advise all of you to take your blankets and anything else that you don't use on a daily

basis and store it at your house.  Things that you do need every day, store in the trunk of your car or in

your truck.

Holiday Cookie Exchange

Bet you didn’t know that APC kids can bake and cook as well

as they ride! The kids had a great time sampling each other’s

cookies, making ornaments and munching on the buffet.

Ms. Kim brought freshly painted horseshoes that the kids

transformed into wonderful keepsakes and miniature

stockings were decorated and stuffed with treats for their

ponies.

A contest was held for the tastiest cookies, the best

decorated cookies and the best ornament.   As usual the

competition was fierce so Chef Quentin and his staff had a

tough time choosing.  Congrats go out to Jada for the Best

Decorated Cookie and to Abby D for the Tastiest Cookie as

well as for the Best Ornament.   APC families generously

donated hats, scarves, and gloves at the party – we

collected over 3 bags full to donate to county organizations

that assist needy citizens.    Thanks to all of the moms and

dads for helping.

Enjoy the holiday season and all of the yummy cookies!

Great News!!!

Sarah S. competed last weekend at the Fair Hill International Presidents Cup on a scramble team. Her team "Capital Situation" came in first place!  It was a major success and she represented Maryland with great pride.  She got a whole hand full of wonderful prizes.  Her coach had her playing 32 out of a total of 36 games.  She played flawlessly on Sunday, helping the team hold first place.  She is currently working on her application for the International Games Team and hopes to be representing the US next year.

What Makes Pony Club Different?

The mission of Pony Club is "to provide a program for youth that teaches riding, mounted sports, and the care of horses and ponies, thereby developing responsibility, moral judgment, leadership and self-confidence.” Members of USPC have joined an organization dedicated to producing well-rounded horsemen and women and one that has produced many of the past and current Olympic and International riders.

USPC is unique because its educational programs place equal emphasis on the teaching of riding skills, horse-care fundamentals, and team participation with sportsmanship. From the moment youth join USPC until they graduate, they are part of a broad network of activities and educational programs that promote the health and safety of both horse and rider. USPC is dedicated to developing knowledgeable, competent, responsible, and caring horsemen.

Standards of Proficiency
The USPC Standards of Proficiency provide a core curriculum for individualized instruction. Clubs and centers use the Standards as a plan for instruction programs. The Standards describe a clear progression of skills in riding and Horse Management and provide opportunities for goal setting, as members are encouraged to proceed though those skills at a pace that is comfortable for them. Riding is something we do for fun! Ratings are given in an effort to recognize achievements and encourage members to gain confidence, independence and good safety habits while working with mounts. Goal setting, teaching and testing are good ways to accomplish this purpose.

Horse Management

One of the things that separates Pony Club from other youth equestrian organizations is the emphasis that is placed on Horse Management. While members learn how to ride, they also learn how to care for their pony or horse. All clubs have a Horse Management program designed to teach skills and provide knowledge as members progress through the ratings.

Safety
A concern for safety is an important part of the foundation of USPC. Ours was the first equine organization to require its members to wear safety helmets. Our guiding beliefs regarding safety reach into every aspect of the organization. Volunteers and staff make safety a priority.

What Do Members Do In Pony Club?

Learn…

Pony Club members participate in mounted meetings where the basics of riding skills are stressed and taught continually at all levels. All clubs and centers try to organize a program that is fun, educational and interesting to younger and older members. Mounted meetings are often structured so that older, upper-level members who are serious about setting and pursuing their goals may practice at their own level of intensity. Younger members are offered lots of fun mixed in with educational opportunities. In addition to the mounted meetings, there are also unmounted meetings that are often structured around Horse Management instruction. Some examples of lessons are: feed (cost and type), shoeing, vet visits, temperature, pulse and respiratory rate, training schedules, tack (types, care, fitting, construction, use), breeds of horses and ponies, safety issues, grooming, loading and hauling, First Aid, breeding/foaling, stable manners, under-standing horse sports, and so much more.

Horse people generally recognize USPC members by their responsible and complete approach to horse care. Members should be proud of their Horse Management; it sets USPC apart from all other horse/riding organizations.

Do…

Through participation in club and center activities, members begin to work their way up through the ratingsestablished by the Standards of Proficiency. At the ratings members demonstrate their riding and Horse Management skills.

Another wonderful part of being a Pony Club member is participating in competitive rallies. Pony Club rallies provide an opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in an atmosphere of cooperation, fun and teamwork. A rally allows Pony Club members to test their skills against others. In addition, rallies are educational experiences that expose participants to new ideas and ways of doing things.

Teach!
Cooperation, confidence, and leadership are all traits that Pony Club develops in its members and these are best built up through teaching. Teaching is the best way for members to work together, gain self-confidence in their skills, and learn how to lead others. It is also a great way to really cement what they have learned.

Peer-to-peer teaching is a very important part of Pony Club. Most clubs and centers have a mentoring program in place where an older Pony Club member is assigned to a younger member. The older member can answer questions (or refer the question to someone who can), encourage participation, explain the intricacies of Pony Club, and to just "be there” for the new member. As new members become integrated into the club or center and progress in their learning, they in turn are expected to help newer and younger members.

As members reach the C ratings, they will begin to learn how to formally teach. They will begin with teaching Horse Management skills and advance to teaching riding skills. With the help of instructors and other adults in the club or center, members will learn how to make and implement a lesson plan, how to handle the unexpected (i.e., uncooperative mount, distressed child, etc.), how to evaluate the progress of students, and so much more.

How to Join Pony Club

The Pony Club program is offered through two different administrative structures.
The traditional Pony Club is administered by parents and other adult volunteers in the area. Typically, a child must own a horse or have access to a horse in order to participate in club Pony Club activities. However, some clubs do have horses that may be leased, or have a relationship with a facility through which a member may lease a horse. The involvement of the parent(s) is vital to the success of the club.Learn more about clubs.
Riding Centers are equestrian facilities that have been recognized by USPC to offer the Pony Club program through the administration of the facility. Typically, centers will have mounts available for members in their center, although having a mount generally does not exclude a child from joining a center. Learn more about centers.
